WHAT IS THE BARTON READING & SPELLING SYSTEM?
The Barton Reading & Spelling System is a ten level program that begins at the very beginning with Phonemic Awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and process sounds quickly. Research has demonstrated that lack of phonemic awareness is the root cause of reading failure. Phonemes are the smallest unit of spoken language, not written language. Children who lack phonemic awareness are unable to distinguish or manipulate sounds within spoken words or syllables. Some examples of this are Phoneme Segmentation: What sounds do you hear in the word hat or what is the last sound in the word cat? Phoneme Matching: Do pig and pet start with the same sound? Phoneme Substitution: What word would you have if you changed the /h/ in hot to /p/?
If a child lacks phonemic awareness, they will have difficulty learning the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent in words, as well as applying those letter/sound correspondences to help them "sound out" unknown words. Phonemic awareness must exist or be explicitly and directly taught before phonics instruction begins. Otherwise, the phonics instruction will not make sense, especially to a dyslexic child. Therefore, phonemic awareness and phonological processing, which refers to the understanding of sounds used in our language, should be taught before letters are introduced.
Every student I begin tutoring, whether it be a child or adult, I start with teaching phonemic awareness. To do this, I set out blank colored tiles and give them a two letter nonsense word to repeat. The student will first blend the two sounds together slowly and then determine how many different sounds they hear in that word. Once they have done that, they will pull down two different colored tiles representing the two different sounds. Next, I will ask the student to touch the first colored tile and say just the first sound and then touch the second colored tile while saying the second sound. Once that step is mastered, I will move on to the next step in the program. When the student has mastered phonemic awareness and has passed the Posttest, I will start tutoring the second level in the program which is Consonants & Short Vowels
